Pune: Former President A P J Abdul Kalam today said despite the economic slowdown worldwide, India had the capacity to become a developed nation by 2020.
Dr Kalam said the country was making tremendous growth in every field, including science, technology, IT and education and India would become a world player, leading the comity of nations in these sectors.
Inaugurating the ''ALPAVIRAM'', contemplating Vision 2020, at the Symbiosis Institute of Business Management here, the eminent nuclear scientist said providing Urban facilities to Rural Areas will certainly produce the desired results.
Speaking at length, Dr Kalam pointed out that the phenomenal growth in technology and education, had led to the country's growth going upto 8 per cent in the past two years and expressed the hope that it could turn into double digits and power the country to be a truely developed nation by 2020.
Dr Kalam, who was bestowed with the country's highest civilian award'' Bharat Ratna '' in 1997, hoped that the physical connectivity between urban and rural araes will go a long way in achieving the cherished dream.
The eminent scientist, hailed as the people's president, laid great stress on growing trees to have a clean environment. Dr Kalam planted a sapling at the sprawling complex of the institute, which came up three years back in the Symbiosis Knowledge Village of Lavale, near here.
In his inimitable style, replying to a question by a student in the packed auditorium, he said ''What do you like to be remembered for.'' Dr Kalam parried questions with a straight bat which pertained to various subjets from politics to fundamentalism. ''The challenge now is to transform India into a developed nation and you the young generation can do it'', he said.
Dr Kalam donated two of his books '' Scientific India'' and ''Indomitable Courage'' to the institute.
Earlier, Dr S B Mujumdar, Chancellor, Symbiosis International University, welcomed the guests.
