Kolkata: Saying the UN
was in a bad shape and "almost dysfunctional", Germany's envoy to
India Friday called for urgent reforms of the UN Security Council.
"Unfortunately, the UN is in a bad shape. It is almost
dysfunctional. They reflect the geo-politic landscape of the 1940s
and not that of the 21st century," German ambassador Thomas
Matussek said here.
Speaking at an interaction with three trade bodies, Matussek said:
"If we want the Security Concul to be a representative body, then
we need to have reforms. It is urgent and we all together have to
work for it."
Germany and India are among the five countries which have won
two-year terms in the Security Council as non-veto members. They
will take their seats January.
Like Germany, India has been pressing for a permanent role in the
reformed Security Council.
