Mumbai:
Gautam Gambhir(96 not out) and MS Dhoni (59 not out) took India
closer to the Sri Lanka's 275-run target in the World Cup final at
the Wankhede here Saturday. Gambhir and Dhoni had shared an unbeaten
117-run stand by the end of the 40th over with the score at 221 for
three.
The left-hand batsman and the captain got together after Virat
Kohli's dismissal in the 22nd over with the score at 114 for three.
Gambhir also forged 83-run stand with Kohli to bring India in
contention after the early loss of Virender Sehwag and Sachin
Tendulkar.
Sri Lanka earlier were in full control upfront after fast bowler
Lasith Malinga brought an abrupt end to Tendulkar's World Cup
campaign by sending him back for just 18 runs with the score at 31
for two in 6.1 overs.
Tendulkar, who was still waiting for his 100th international
century, edged a Malinga delivery to wicketkeeper Kumar Sangakkara
to stun the capacity crowd into silence.
India lost Sehwag in the first over.
