Nagpur: Over 3,100
couples, including a legislator and an actress, exchanged wedding
vows Wednesday at a mass marriage ceremony conducted at Maharashtra's Amravati district in the presence of several top
politicians.
The community wedding, said to be one of the largest, was attended
by Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan, state Industries Minister
Narayan Rane, Amravati guardian minister Ramkrishna Vikhe-Patil,
yoga guru Baba Ramdev and Sahara India Pariwar chief Subroto Roy.
The event at Amravati, 150 km from here, organised by Amravati
legislator Ravi Rana, also saw him tying the knot with south
Indian actress Navneet Kaur.
"I am glad the function was a success," Rana said after the
ceremony.
Rana said he plans to send the entry to the Guinness Book of World
Records as the largest mass marriage ceremony conducted so far.
The ceremony held at the Science Core ground of the city was
attended by over a lakh residents.
Over 1,000 policemen were deployed in the city for the ceremony
and school and colleges also observed a holiday.
