Panewadi (Manmad): Police has today detained four people in the case involving the murder of Yeshwant Sonawane, the Additional Collector of Malegaon.

"We have detained four people including Popat Shinde who appeared to be the main accused", Milind Bhambre, Superintendent of Police (Nashik Rural) said while briefing the media on the spot where the incident has taken place.

"Popat Shinde has received 70% burn while attacking Yeshwant Sonawane", Bhambre said.

"Other accused who are detained include Rajive Sirsat and Kachru Suralkar", he added.

He said that Popat Shinde appears to be a habitual criminal and has earlier police records.

Yeshwant Sonawane, the additional collector of Malegaon in Nasik district was killed today afternoon when he was burnt alive by the people involved with the kerosine mafia.

"Yeswhant Sonawane was going to Nandgaon - a small town 35 kms to Malegoaon in his jurisdiction by road when someone informed him some mixing in petrol is going on nearby. He got down from his car and went to check what is happening when he was attacked and burnt by some people", Additional Superintendent of Police (ASP) Chandreshekahr Chougale said while speaking to ummid.com.

The incident occurred 20-30 meters away from the Manmad-Nandgaon road behind a dhaba - a village restaurant.

Earlier reports had suggested that Yeshwant Sonawane was conducting a raid on people involved in petrol-adulteration on Manmad-Panewadi road - some 40 kms from Malegaon when he was attacked.

Meanwhile, Superintendent of Police (Nashik Rural) Milind Bhambre while briefing the media on the spot said Yeshwant Sonawane was going to Nandgaon when he was stopped on the road and informed that some people are mixing kerosen in a tanker behind the dhaba.

"He got down from his car and went to see what's going on. He saw someone actually mixing kerosene in the tanker. Suddenly few people came on bike and attacked him and using the same kerosene burnt him alive", Bhambre said to the media.

The incident has generated shock waves in Malegaon as Yeshwant Sonawane was known for his devotion towards empowerment of the people in Malegaon and development of the city.

January 24 yesterday, Yeshwant Sonawane was in Mumbai to attend a meeting called by Maharashtra Minority Department on the establishment of Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) off campus. He submitted the land proposal from Malegaon to establish this centre in Malegaon.

The death of Yeshwanr Sonawane is a personal loss for ummid.com as he was always eager to lend his helping hand for the development of the poor and oppressed.

The post of Additional Collector has recently been introduced in Malegaon and Yeshwant Sonawane was the onlt second to occupy this post. Before that he had also worked as SDM Malegaon and as caretaker Municipal Commissioner for a brief period.

Yesterday, Yeshwant Sonawane was so excited and pleased saying that he was the only district authority who came with a concrete land proposal for the purpose. He called up ummid.com from the Mantralya and informed that the Malegaon proposal is now officially under consideration.
