SC issues notice on sterilization

New Delhi:
The Supreme Court Monday issued notice to the central and all
state governments on a petition seeking that sterilization should
be done only by trained doctors in proper hospitals.
Justice R.M. Lodha and Justice H.L. Gokhale issued notice on
senior counsel Collin Gonsalves' petition which alleged that NGOs
were carrying out sterlization in the most unhygienic conditions.
Gonsalves told the court that the NGOs lacked trained medical
personnsl and were not giving anesthesia to patients.
He alleged that in some cases, school desks were used as operation
table, and simple torches used to provide lighting.
