Malegaon: Call it a
political compulsion or
a mockery of people’s verdict. Congress and Teesra Mahaz – the two
parties which were blaming each other for all the evils in the
town during the poll campaign have decided to sit together in the
newly elected Malegaon Municipal Corporation (MMC).
The decision
is taken in a meeting held in Mumbai on Tuesday between leaders of both the parties and
the Congress high command.
Speaking to ummid.com from Mumbai on
phone, leader of the Teesra Mahaz and local MLA Mufti Mohd Ismael
said that he received the offer of an alliance from Manekrao
Thakre - Maharashtra Pradesh Congress Committee (MPCC) chief,
Maharashtra. After consulting with his partymen it was decided to
accept the offer.
Stating that any delay or talking
with smaller parties would have given rise to horse trading, he
said, "We decided to form an alliance with the Congress to avoid
'horse trading' and keeping in mind development of the town."
"The Congress is in power in the
state as well as at the centre. An alliance with them would help
in getting funds needed for the development of the town", he
added.
Malegaon Municipal Corporation
elections were held on April 15. However, no party could win 41
seats - the number needed to rule the civic body alone.
While the Congress emerged as the
single largest party by winning 25 of the total 80 seats, Teesra
Mahaz won on 19 seats.
Confirming the reports of the
alliance, Shaikh Asif, president of the Malegaon Congress party
said that the alliance was formed after the leaders of the Teesra
Mahaz agreed to work jointly for the people of the town.
As per the agreement reached between
the two, he said, the Congress will have its mayor for the entire
term whereas Teesra Mahaz will have its candidate for the post of
Deputy Mayor.
