Patna: Protesting
against non-payment of their salaries for nearly 11 months,
hundreds of parateachers showed black flags to Bihar Chief
Minister Nitish Kumar Monday and shouted slogans against his
government during his Sewa Yatra in East Champaran district,
officials said.
"Hundreds of parateachers showed black flags to Nitish Kumar to
express their anger and unhappiness over non-payment of their
salaries for months," a district official said.
Some agitating teachers also tried to burn an effigy of the chief
minister on the last day of his Sewa Yatra Monday, but local
police stopped them.
Earlier, the para-teachers had marched with begging bowls in
Motihari Saturday and Sunday to protest against Kumar's visit.
They alleged that while the chief minister was lavishly spending
crores of rupees on Sewa Yatra, he had no money to pay to them.
The teachers opposed two types of payment for the same work.
"While one teacher is drawing Rs 36,000 per month, the other is
getting Rs 6,000. What type of system is this?" one of them asked.
The teachers claimed that two of their colleagues had died as they
did not get their salaries.
However, the chief minister appealed to the protesting teachers to
cooperate with the government for its smooth functioning.
