Mumbai: Thousands of
Congressmen, including freedom fighters, remembered the sacrifices
of the country's founding fathers on the occasion of the 70th
anniversary of 'Quit India' movement here Thursday, a party leader
said.
The Congress activists gathered Thursday morning at Chowpatty and
then went in a procession to the historic August Kranti Maidan at
Gowalia Tank.
The processionists were accompanied by chariots bearing huge
posters on moments of India's freedom struggle and the events
leading to the country's Independence on Aug 15, 1947.
Mahatma Gandhi had given a clarion call to the British rulers to
"Quit India" during the Bombay session of the Indian National
Congress in 1942.
Though the agitation was forcibly crushed, within the next five
years, it marked the beginning of the end of the British Empire,
with India gaining Independence.
Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan, who was present at the 70th
anniversary celebrations, honoured several senior freedom fighters
who dedicated their lives to the country.
Later, state Congress chief Manikrao Thakre launched the 'Rajiv
Gandhi Suraksha Kavach' on the eve of 'Dahi-Handi' which will be
celebrated Friday on the Janmashtami.
Under the scheme, the Maharashtra Pradesh Congress Committee will
provide a free insurance coverage of between Rs.15,000-Rs.150,000
to 15,025 Govindas from 293 Dahi-Handi associations all over
Mumbai.
