Hyderabad: The
situation was tense in Nalgonda town of Andhra Pradesh Tuesday
after violence broke out during a religious procession, police
said.
A day after violence over a petty incident, some people tried to
take out Hanuman Jayanthi procession in violation of prohibitory
orders, which led to tension in the town, about 100 km from
Hyderabad.
Police stopped the procession and baton charged the mob after it
pelted stones and attacked a police out post. A few people were
injured in stone pelting. Two buses were also damaged.
A mob also attacked a school which was opened despite a shutdown
called by some groups to protest Monday's incident.
Deputy Inspector General of Police, Hyderabad range, Nagi Reddy is
camping in the town. He and district Superintendent of Police
Navin Gulati have appealed for calm.
Police intensified patrolling and rushed additional forces from
Mahabubnagar and other neighboring districts to beef up security
in the town.
A police officer said five cases were booked against the
miscreants and 50 people were picked up. He said the situation was
now peaceful.
State-owned Road Transport Corporation stopped bus services as a
precautionary measure. Police also ordered closure of all liquor
shops in the town till Thursday.
The trouble started Monday over a minor incident. A two-wheeler
rider allegedly assaulted an auto-rickshaw driver and damaged his
vehicle after an accident, in which the child of the two-wheeler
rider was injured.
