Heavy rains lash Mumbai, disrupt traffic

Mumbai: Heavy rains,
the first major showers of the delayed monsoon, lashed Mumbai
Thursday. Though rail and road traffic was disrupted and hundreds
of commuters were inconvenienced, the harried Mumbaikars welcomed
the downpour. More rain is expected over the next day, the
weatherman said.
According to weather officials, Colaba (south Mumbai) recorded 50
mm rain, while Santacruz (north Mumbai) recorded rainfall of 93 mm
since Wednesday night.
Rail and road traffic was hit as trains were running late by 15-30
minutes and most arterial roads of the city were flooded with rain
water, making it difficult for vehicles as well as pedestrians to
wade through.
Making a late entry as against the forecast date of June 10, the
monsoon in the city Thursday left many areas of northwest Mumbai
like Khar, Jogeshwari, Bandra, Goregaon, and Malad waterlogged.
Though the weather office had issued a warning for heavy to very
heavy rainfall, the city saw somewhat less after 3 p.m. Thursday.
The city Thursday recorded a maximum temperature of 30 degrees
Celsius and a minimum of 27 degrees Celsius early morning.
However, the mercuryt rose by two degrees by late afternoon.
Though the downpour leased by afternoon, rail and road traffic
continued to be disrupted. Suburban trains were running late by 20
minutes on average on the western line.
The Central Railway cancelled 148 suburban train services during
the day. Central Railway trains also were running late by 30-35
minutes because of signal problems at various locations.
Five incidences of building collapse were recorded in Dharavi in
south-central Mumbai, and Jogeshwari, Kandivli, Borivli and Bandra
in northwest Mumbai. There were no casualties.
Over 50 trees also collapsed in various areas of the city,
blocking vehicular traffic.
The heavy showers brought some relief to Mumbai, which has been
facing severe water crisis after the monsoon skipped its regular
date of arrival of June 10. The BrihanMumbai Municipal Corporation
(BMC) had warned that the city with a population of nearly 18
million will face severe water shortages for the rest of the year
if monsoon fails in Mumbai.
Continuous rain also left many low-lying areas in south Mumbai
waterlogged and caused traffic snarls on the two main Express
Highways Thursday. Low-lying areas like Hindmata, Parel and Dadar
were partially submerged.
