Srinagar: Students of a government higher secondary school here
came together Thursday for a demand of a different kind - teachers
for their school.
Dozens of students gathered at the Press Enclave in Residency Road
area here shouting slogans against the authorities whom they
blamed for ignoring their education.
"Our school principal retired last month and since then nobody has
been heading our school. We come to school in the morning and are
told to go home at 12 noon," said Zameer, 15, one of the
protesting students.
"We have no teachers to teach us commerce and many other subjects.
School teachers have expressed their helplessness saying it is in
the hands of the director school education," Zameer added.
Police intervened to disperse the protesting students using batons
as no senior official of the school education department came to
pacify the students or address their genuine grievance.
"We have intervened to maintain law and order as an assembly of
five or more people is deemed as unlawful under section 144 of the
CrPc (The Code of Criminal Procedure) which is in force in the
city," said a police officer.
"It is wrong to use batons even when students protest demanding
teachers for their school," said Bashir Ahmad War, a retired
veterinarian here.
