Mumbai: In a shocking incident occurring barely a fortnight after a Muslim professional was beaten by the Thane police, Mumbai police personnel on Thursday detained and brutally beat a 19-year old Muslim youth of Govandi, media reports said.

Irfan Mohd Mustaqueem Ansari (19), a resident of Chikhalwadi slums in Baiganwadi area of Govandi in Mumbai suburbs was taken into custody after he went to the police station enquiring about the arrest of his elder brother Alam Mustaqueem Ansari and Ataullah Khan, according to the Inquilab.

The duo were detained by the Shivaji Nagar police personnel when they were patrolling in search of a criminal who was allegedly involved in looting and violence on Wednesday night, Urdu Times reported.

Alam while talking to the reporters said that they were taken to the police station and charged under section 151 of IPC without citing any reason. He said that they pleaded with the police that they did not know any criminal but the police personnel started brutally beating them.

On Friday at around 10 p.m. while they were still under the police custody, Irfan complained of chest and abdomen pain and fell unconscious. "I requested the police to provide him the medical aid. After they refused, I with the help of my friend Ataullah Khan took Irfan to nearby Vikas Nursing Home where his condition is serious and he is being treated in the intensive care unit", Alam said.

When senior police officials were contacted, they denied having any knowledge of the incident. "We were busy in a meeting. We will probe if any such incident has occurred", senior police inspector of Shivaji Nagar police station RS Agarwal is quoted as saying.

The incident has sent shock waves in the entire area.

On May 2, Bilal Shaikh, a resident of Bhiwandi was beaten up by the Thane police. Later he was admitted to the hospital and had to spend 10 days in the ICU. But after he was discharged from the hospital, police arrested him, slapped a false charges and sent him to jail.
