Aligarh: The Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) has been ranked 50 among top 100 institutions of higher learning in BRICS (the group of newly developed and industrialized countries including Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa), while Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi holds 57th position.
In a study made by the Times Higher Education, UK for the year 2014, ten Indian institutions of higher learning have made to the ranking of institutions of BRICS and emerging economies, out of which 6 are IITs.
The Aligarh Muslim University (AMU), located some 220 kms from Indian's capital New Delhi, is a central university founded in 1920.
Manipal varsity, located 430 km from Bangalore, which was granted deemed university status in 1993, was ranked at 100th place for its overall progress by Britain-based QS Quacquarelli Symonds among the institutions of higher learning in the BRCIS (Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa) grouping.
This was the maiden evaluation of universities in the five countries spanning Asia, Africa and South America by the British firm, which specialises in education abroad.
The ranking was done on eight indicators, including academic reputation, employer reputation, faculty-student ratio and citations per paper.
As rankings are used as a tool to determine the choice of a university the world over, the private university has initiated steps to engage with ranking agencies with data.
