Indians, Indonesians, Canadians most eco-conscious tourists: Survey

Wednesday May 01, 2013 08:44:37 PM, IANS

Kolkata: Indians, Indonesians and Canadians have topped a survey conducted among tourists, based on incorporating green practices in businesses, according to a survey by an international travel site.

The survey, TripBarometer by TripAdvisor, reveals that travellers from India, Indonesia and Canada think hoteliers should resort to green practices in order to reduce the impact of their business on the environment.

Also, according to the poll, as many as 91 percent of Indian travellers felt accommodation of tourists should be done in an eco-friendly manner.

This is way above the average response for Asia, which stood at 71 percent and the average global sample response of 79 percent.

The comprehensive bi-annual study shows 70 percent of Indian accommodation owners are implementing eco-friendly practices, compared to the Asia average of 73 percent and the global average of 77 percent.

The three major green initiatives adopted by Indian accommodation providers include: use of energy-efficient bulbs (89 percent), a towel-and-linen-re-use programme (83 percent) and use of eco-friendly cleaning products (62 percent).
