Indore: Mahatma Gandhi's granddaughter Tara Gandhi-Bhattacharya on Sunday said she did not find any trace of anguish on Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi's face when he spoke about the 2002 post-Godhra riots.
"I am surprised as to how Modi, being in politics, being a human being, and being from Gujarat, can speak about the riots and that phase of violence without showing any pain", news agency PTI quoted Tara Gandhi as saying.
Narendra Modi, who has recently been declared as Prime Minister candidate by Bhartia Janata Party (BJP) - the Hindu right wing party accused of indulging in politics of hate and destruction, is himself blamed for master-minding the worst-ever communal riots India has seen in Gujarat 2002.
The riots followed after the killing of Kar-sevaks in a train near Godhra. Though, enquiry commissions, and circumstanetial evidence proved that the incident could be an accident, and the fire was from inside the train, the Modi government blamed it on Muslims.
What followed afterwards was killing, looting and open rapes of Muslims for days. More than 2,500 Muslims are said to be killed in the riot in different parts of Gujarat.
Modi won the assembly elections that followed the riots.
Tara Gandhi's statement is important as it is alleged that the recent riots in Uttar Pradesh's Muzaffarnagar district is part of a dirty game plan to divide the state on communal lines for the vote bank politics.
