Panaji: "Educated" boys and girls today are struggling to cope with their social role as husbands and wives and effective parents, God Governor Mridula Sinha said Thursday, underlining the need for "value-based education".
Sinha was speaking at an interaction with students and faculty at Goa University,of which she is the chancellor.
"There is fast degradation of family values and so called educated girls and boys are failing to prove successful in their social roles as husband and wife and as effective parents," she said.
Sinha also advocated setting up of a pre-marriage counselling system and called for revamping of the academic system and re-orient it on the lines of value-based education.
"Our universities need to upgrade their education standards and physical infrastructure to compete with world class universities. Urgent requirement is needed to revamp the academic system to include value-based education," she said while proposing a pre-marital counselling centre which will guide girls and boys on family values.
"Our education system should evolve some kind of value-based learning to prevent derailing of family values, as family in the fundamental unit of the society," she said.
The governor said it was painful to see that parents in their old age were not being looked after by their children and being forced to stay in old age homes.
