Besides Congress president Sonia Gandhi (Rae Bareli) and vice president Rahul Gandhi (Amethi), cricketer Mohammad Kaif (Phoolpur) and Amrishbhai Patel (Dhule-Malegaon) figure in the first list of party candidates for the Lok Sabha elections released Saturday.

Others who figure in the list of over 192 names are union ministers Mallikarjun Kharge and Girija Vyas.

Former prime minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee's niece Karuna Shukla, who joined the Congress last month, has been fielded from Bilaspur in Chhattisgarh.

Among the sitting union ministers fielded Sushil Kumar Shinde will contest from Solapur (Maharashtra), Kamal Nath from his traditional Chhindwara (Madhya Pradesh), Mallikarjun Kharge from Gulbarga (Karnataka), Girija Vyas from Chittorgarh, Jyotiraditya Scindia from Gwalior), R.P.N. Singh from Kushi Nagar in Uttar Pradesh and Preneet Kaur from Patiala.

Other prominent names in the list include Lok Sabha Speaker Meira Kumar (Sasaram - Bihar), Naveen Jindal (Kurukshetra), Mukul Wasnik (Ramtek - Maharashtra), Vilas Muttemwar (Nagpur), Meenakshi Natarajan (Mandsour) and Amita Singh (Sultanpur - UP).

Amrishbhai Patel, who has been given the party ticket from Dhule-Malegaon Lok Sabha seat, had lost in the 2009 general election.

Dhule-Malegaon Lok Sabha seat is among the Muslim majority Lok Sabha constituencies. It was expected that the Congress will field a Muslim candidate from this seat. Local party chief Asif Shaikh Rasheed and few other Muslim leaders tried hard to get the party ticket.

The Congress high command however disappointed them all.
