Coimbatore: A women's conference titled 'Awakening' organised by National Women's Front (NWF) here in the coastal city Sunday termed 'Love Jihad' mere proganda and urged the Modi government to check saffronization of education and history books.
The conference also demanded from the Union Government to introduce the Women's Reservation Bill in the winter session with a sub-quota in the reservation for Muslim, Dalit and Tribal women and women from other backward castes.
A resolution in this connection was passed at the 'Awakening Conference' presided over by NWF president Shahida Aslam.
In her inaugural address, Shahida Aslam termed the conference a major milestone for women activism in India.
"This is the first time such a massive national conference is organized by Indian women", she said urging the women of the country to realize their potential and strive towards establishing equality, justice and peace in the country.
In her key note address, NWF National Vice-President Fatima Alima highlighted various issues faced by women and the need to immediately search a solution for these grave problems. She urged them to stop being dependent on others for their rights and join the struggle to achieve equality.
Representatives from Karnataka, Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Delhi, West Bengal, Andhra Pradesh, Rajasthan and Goa attended the conference.
The resolution argued that 33 per cent representation for women would be insufficient to accommodate women from marginalised communities in local bodies.
They also sought implementation of stringent laws to control sale of dangerous acids, as India accounts for 10 per cent of the acid attack cases globally.
With a demand to give relief for acid attack victims, they also sought steps to rehabilitate the victims who are undergoing physical and mental agony.
In the conference, the women also sought Central Government's control on forcible sterilisation of women, action against miscreants and organisations spreading false propaganda on 'Love Jihad', review of all cases relating to communal violence and ensure justice and rehabilitation of riot victims and stopping plans for saffronization of history and syllabus.
State presidents of NWF Kerala, Karnataka and Tamilnadu also spoke on the occasion and presented the success of NWF and Awakening conference in their respective states.
