New Delhi: Asifa Khan, the Muslim woman face of the Bhartiya Janta Party (BJP), after the Delhi election results were declared Tuesday defended prime minister Narendra Modi saying people like Sakshi Maharaj were responsible for the party's humiliating defeat.
"I disagree with the people who blame Prime Minister Narendra Modi for the debacle. In my opinion, Modi did what he could. As the Delhi BJP president Satish Upadhyay says the state unit has taken the responsibility for the defeat", she said in a statement released after the Delhi election results were out.
"I must admit that the statements by the likes of Sakshi Maharaj have alienated the minorities and liberal Hindus. I repeat, not just minorities, also the liberal Hindus", she added.
"In India, we rule by the constitution. It should be followed by all of us. By making inflammatory statements, Sakshi Maharaj type cost us votes of all liberal voters. It is a lesson and we must be very careful in future", she said.
Stating that she did not agree with those who attack Modi for the defeat in Delhi. she said, "Modi has been winning elections since 2002. He has won several elections for the party including the historic victory in the Lok Sabha election in May 2014. He did his best. But something has gone terribly wrong. It needs a thorough introspection."
The BJP, ruling at the centre, faced humiliating defeat in the 2015 Delhi elections. Contrary to its tall claims the paty could just win 03 seats in the house of 70. Critics are of the view that the results are a setback for Modi and he is the one who shoud take responsibility for the defeat.
"This was expected. The result is a defeat for (Prime Minister) Narendra Modi. What did the Bharatiya Janata Party do in the past nine months?" veteran social crusader Anna Hazare told mediapersons as the results showed a big win for the AAP in the national capital.
He said the BJP only made promises to tackle corruption. "Instead they took anti-people and anti-farmer decisions. They lost public confidence."
