Allahabad: Permission for the All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (MIM) chief and Hyderabad MP Asaduddin Owaisi has been refused permission to hold a rally in Allahabad on March 15 has been withdrawn, the local administration said citing "apprehensions of law and order disturbances".
This is the third time Asaduddin Owaisi, winner of 'Model MP' award, has been refused permission to hold a rally in Uttar Pradesh. He was earlier denied permission to hold rallies in Azamgarh and Meerut. On February 13 this year, the MIM had held its maiden rally in Uttar Pradesh - without Owaisi - in Maharajganj district.
Owaisi had faced similar situation ahead of the Maharashtra state elections in 2014 when his rallies were denied permissions in Malegaon, Mumbai, Dhule and Aurangabad one after the other.
Last month, Owaisi was also denied entry into Bengaluru. He however surprised the police officers by offering flowers to them for the move.
The MIM had announced that it will launch its campaign in Uttar Pradesh with party's national president Asaduddin Owaisi holding rallies in Allahabad and Agra this month. The party had also granted permission for the rallies at both the places. The permission however is revoked by the local administration.
According to Additional District Magistrate (City), SK Sharma, permission could not be granted for the public meeting on Sunday at any of the proposed sites "following reports of the local intelligence unit of the police which expressed apprehensions of law and order disturbances in the wake of a speech by the AIMIM leader".
Supporters of the MIM have threatened to move the Allahabad High Court against the state government's decision.
"The SP government is setting up hurdles and wants to prevent the MIM from holding its democratic activities in UP," said Shaukat Ali and state level AIMIM leader.
"The SP is afraid of the popularity of the MIM and its leaders. Citing law and order problem is a mere eyewash", he added.
The city convener of MIM, Afsar Mahmood, also charged that the local administration "was acting upon instructions received from the Samajwadi Party government in the state, especially Cabinet minister Azam Khan, who is scared of Owaisi's growing popularity among the Muslims of UP".
"Khan and his ilk are nervous as Owaisi has been calling the bluff of the SP leaders in UP," Mahmood said.
