The sighting of the crescent will mark the end of the month of Ramadan during which Muslims observed fast. Fasting is one of the five pillars of Islam.
The beginning and end of Ramadan, and a month in the Islamic Calendar, has traditionally been based on “hilal” sightings, which is the method mentioned in the Holy Quran and followed by the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him).
As per this tradition, a new month is sighted on 29th of the prevailing month. If the new moon, Crescent, is sighted, the next day is counted as first day of the next month. If not, the next day is counted as 30th day of the prevailing month and the new month begins thereafter.
Varying geographical and weather conditions meant that people in different locations cannot see the appearance of the crescent the same day, making Muslims around the world fast on different days.
Saudi Arabia, UAE, Qatar and other Arab States except Oman declared Sunday as the first day of Eid al Fitr. Shawwal 1st in these countries is today and Muslims in these countries are celebrating Eid after the moon was sighted on Saturday 29th of Ramadan in the region.

Muslims in the United States and Canada rely on moon sighting reports from Saudi Arabia and hence they are celebrating Eid al Fitr today.
Reports from London said new moon could not be sighted anywhere in UK on Saturday. Hence Muslims here will complete the 30 days of Ramadan and celebrate Eid on Monday June 26, 2017.
As for Kerala, Bhatkal, Udupi, Mangalore and parts of Coastal Karnataka, Muslims in this part of India started observing Ramadan a day before, and are celebrating Eid today i.e. Sunday June 25. The decision to celebrate Eid today in this part of India is taken after moon was sighted on Saturday, local moon sighting committees announced yesterday.
