New Delhi: E Sreedharan - the Metro Man who played a pivotal role in building of Kochi Metro has emerged as yet another person who could be BJP led NDA's candidate for the new President of India, a media report claimed even as some other reports had earlier said that Sushma Swaraj's candidature is almost final.
As a row erupted after Sreedharan's name was omitted from the list of invitees and the persons who will share the stage with Prime Minister Modi during the inaugural ceremony of the Kochi Metro on Saturday, the Prime Minister Office (PMO) said there is a reason behind the omission.
"There is a strong probability of Sreedharan being nominated as the ruling BJP-led NDA's candidate for the president's post in the July 17 election.
"It would be improper if he is seen sitting with PM Modi and Union Urban Development Minister M Venkaiah Naidu on the dais just days before the name of the NDA candidate is announced. Moreover, PM Modi maintains distance with the person he has to push up," India Today reported siting PMO sources.
The PMO has kept Sreedharan in the loop, they added. This is one of the reasons why the 'Metro Man' did not object to his exclusion because he in the know of things, the report said.
However, News18 citing its sources had claimed yesterday that the NDA has almost finalised External Affair Minister Sushma Swaraj for the top constitutional post of the county.
Citing its sources the News18 in a report published Wednesday said NDA has finalised Sushma Swaraj's candidature as she is a woman, has a political background and a person of the RSS family.
The names of Sushma Swaraj and E Sreedharan cropped a day before Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh and other ministers are scheduled to meet Congress president Sonia Gandhi and CPI (M) General Secretary Sitaram Yechuri to build consensus on the new president to avoid election.
the Bhartiya Janata Party (BJP) is politically weak in south. Hence it is widely specualted that the party may go for someone from South India for the new president.
The BJP had sprung a surprise in 2002 by proposing the name of Missile Man APJ Abdul Kalam for the top post.
