New Delhi: Tajamul Islam - the 08-year-old girl from Kashmir, who made the headlines after winning the Gold Medal at the World Kickboxing Championship of under-eight players in Italy’s Andria region, Wednesday met Sports Minister Vijay Goel and demanded recognition of the sport by his ministry.
Tajamul Islam while meeting the minister said others in the country will be encouraged to join Kickboxing if it gets the Sports Ministry's recognition.
"I want the Sports Ministry to recognise Kickboxing so that other players like me also get the inspiration to learn this game. I want all children like me to gain recognition in the field of Kickboxing,” she said on Wednesday after meeting the Sports Minister.
Sports Minister Vijay Goel, had earlier written to Jammu & Kashmir Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti and urged her to provide adequate infrastructure to the state’s kickboxers.
The move followed after Tajamul Islam posted a video on her Facebook page slamming the Jammu and Kashmir government for not providing basic facilities to the Ali Sports Academy.
"I had written to Mehbooba Mufti when I saw Tajamul's post, to provide facilities in order to promote Kickboxing", Sports Minister Vijay Goel said in a tweet posted after his meeting with the young champion.
"Met little wonder girl from #Kashmir Tajamul Islam who has made #India proud in the global arena of #kickboxing. We are proud of her!", Goel said in another message.
In her video, Tajamul Islam showed the degrading condition of the academy, and urged the state government to set up an indoor academy for the athletes.
Following her Facebook post, Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti, who also heads the state’s Sports Council, decided to release an amount of Rs. 10 lakh for the upgradation of sports infrastructure at Ali Academy, Bandipora.
“I want to thank the Sports Minister for writing to Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti, urging her to provide adequate infrastructure to the state’s kickboxers", Tajamul Islam said.
The Sports Minister on his part said that they would definitely consider the suggestion of giving recognition to kickboxing.
Earlier, Prime Minister Narendra Modi had spoken about Tajamul Islam during his monthly radio show “Mann Ki Baat” and encouraged others to follow her footsteps.
