Malegaon: All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) Malegaon unit chief Abdul Malik Yunus Isa has filed nomination against former MLA, Malegaon Congress President and the party's Mayoral candidate Shaikh Rasheed for the forthcoming Malegaon Municipal Corporation (MMC) elections due to be held on May 24.
Abdul Malik Yunus Isa, a sitting corporator and former Mayor of Malegaon, who had joined the AIMIM of Asaduddin Owaisi ahead of the Maharashtra Assembly elections 2014, has filed nomination papers from Ward no. 17 and Ward no. 20.
Reports coming from the local election office after scrutiny of papers Monday said his nomination papers from both the wards have been found correct. Shaikh Rasheed is contesting the upcoming Malegaon civic elections from Ward no. 20.
The Congress party has already declared that Shaikh Rasheed will be Mayor of Malegaon if the party comes to the power after the May 24 elections.
Besides Abdul Malik, other AIMIM candidates who have filed nomination papers included Shaikh Yunus Isa, Dr Khalid Pervez, Nafees Qureshi, Hameeda Bano, Javed Abdus Sattar and others.
Others in the race besides the Congress and AIMIM are Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) and Janata Dal (Secular). The two parties have formed pre-poll alliance to contest the Malegaon corporation elections.
Former MLA Mufti Ismael and current Mayor Ibrahim National are leading the NCP whereas Bulund Iqbal, son of veteran socialist leader Nehal Ahmed, along with Mustaqeem Dignity are the faces of Janata Dal (S) in Malegaon.
The Bhartiya Janata Party (BJP) has also fielded 77 candidates in Malegaon, majority of the candidates being Muslims.
The Shiv Sena has fielded candidates only in the Hindu majority areas of the city.
Prominent among the Shiv Sena and BJP candidates are sitting corporators Jyoti Bhosale, Narendra Sonawane, Sakharam Ghodke, Sunil Gaikwad, Sanjay Dusane, Gulab Pagare, Sunita Suresh Gawli and Vijay Kadhe.
A total of 444 candidates have submitted some 780 nomination papers for 84 wards where elections to elect new members will be held on May 24.
The nomination papers for the elections were accepted till May 6. The scrutiny of nomination papers were done on May 8, and the last date for withdrawal of nomination papers is May 11.
The allotment of election symbols will be done on May 12 and the final publication of the list of contestants will be made on May 12
A total of 3,91,320 voters will exercise their democratic rights to elect as many as 84 Corporators in 21 wards of the Malegaon Municipal Corporation (MMC).
This will be the first time in Malegaon when panel-wise election will be held. Under this system, each registered voter will cast votes to elect four members from a ward.
