Bhubaneswar/Lucknow: Triple Talaq took center stage at the National Executive of the Bhartiya Janata Party (BJP) in Bhubaneswar and All India Muslim Personal Law Board (AIMPLB) in Lucknow on Sunday with both looking determined to counter the menace - but using their own ways.
While referring to Triple Talaq Prime Minister Modi vowed to provide justice to Muslim women on the other hand the All India Muslim Personal Law Board (AIMPLB) called for social boycott of those misusing the privilege granted by Islam.
In his address to the BJP national executive in Bhubaneswar, the Prime Minister said if there are social evils, the society should be woken up and efforts made to provide justice to the victims.
"He (Modi) talked about social justice. He said our Muslim sisters should also get justice. Injustice should not be done with them. Nobody should be exploited.
"We do not want that there is conflict within the Muslim community over this issue. What we have to do is that if there are any scial evils, we have to wake up the society and make efforts to provide justice to them (Muslim women). That was the Prime Minister's spirit," Union Minister Nitin Gadkari said while briefing reporters.
The All India Muslim Personal Law Board (AIMPLB) on the other hand said that the community members, who give triple talaq without valid reasons will face social boycott.
"It has been decided in the executive body meeting that those misusing triple talaq will face social boycott", AIMPLB member Khalid Rasheed Firangi Mehli said after the two-day meet held in Lucknow.
Khalid Rasheed Firangi Mehli also informed about the moral code of conduct, which will solve the misunderstanding with regard to the triple talaq issue.
"There has been misunderstanding on this issue, we will issue a code of conduct on it," he added.
The AIMPLB, which has opposed the PILs filed against the Triple Talaq in the Supreme Court, had earlier on Wednesday said the board will do away with the practice of verbal divorce in one-and-a half years, adding there is no need for government interference.
A five-judge constitution bench of the apex court will start hearing from May 11 the petitions against Triple Talaq.
Differences over practice of Triple Talaq exist in the Islamic Sharia since the tenure of second Caliph Omar (RA). Muslim scholars and jurists argue that concurrent talaq or triple talaq in one go has never been approved by Prphet Mohammad (peace be upon him), during the tenure of first Caliph Abu Bakr (RA) and the first two years of Caliph Omar's caliphate.
Caliph Omar later approved it as punishment, scholars argue, but later on the practice was annulled by Muslim jurists. It is on this basis, the practice of concurrent talaq has been termed invalid in most of the Muslim countries. (Read more about Triple Talaq by clicking here.)
Muslims in India, majority of them followers of Hanafi school of thought, are adamant on the invalid concurrent talaq and are fighting a case with women activists in the Supreme Court.
Interestingly, some renowned Hanafi scholars have also ruled against concurrent or triple talaq. According to the sources in the All India Muslim Personal Law Board (AIMPLB), the members fear that agreeing to any change on triple talaq would open floodgate of interference in other Sharia matters.
It is also learnt that there is a strong dissent among the members of the All India Muslim Personal Law Board (AIMLB) and especially some women members are upset over board's handling of the situation.
