50 sitting MLAs, 05 Congress rebels in BJP first list of 70 for Gujarat elections

Fifty sitting legislators, including Chief Minister Vijay Rupani and Deputy Chief Minister Nitin Patel besides five Congress rebels, figured in the Bhartiya Janata Party (BJP) first list for Gujarat elections released on Friday.

The BJP first list for Gujarat polls was released after the meeting of the party Central Election Committee which was attended by Amit Shah, Prime Minister Modi, Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh, Union Eternal Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj and others.

According to the list released by the BJP, Chief Minister Vijay Rupani will contest from Rajkot West in Saurashtra whereas his deputy Nitin Patel has been fielded from the Mehsana seat.

Gujarat state unit chief of the party Jitu Vaghani has been fielded from the Bhavnagar West seat.

Two MLAs, Varsha Doshi of Wadhwan and Nalin Kotadiya of Dhari, have been dropped from the BJP list.

The seat of BJP MLA Bavku Udhad, who is the sitting MLA from the Lathi constituency, has been changed to Amreli.

The BJP has also fielded Purneshbhai Ishwarlal Modi from Surat West, Bharatbhai Patel from Valsad, Ishwarbhai Ramanbhai Parmar from Bardoli, Ishavarsinh Patel from Ankleshwar, Manishaben Vakil from Vadodra City, Arjunsing Chauhan from Mehemdabad and Mahendrabhai Mashru from Junagadh.

The five former Congressmen who received BJP tickets are Raghavji Patel, Dharmendrasinh Jadeja, Ramsinh Parmar, Mansinh Chauhan and C K Raolji. The five rebelled against the Congress and voted against senior party leader Ahmed Patel in the recently held Rajya Sabha elections.

Despite the cross voting, Ahmed Patel however was able to win the seat.

The Congress has not released its list of candidates so far. On the other hand, the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) has released names of 20 candidates who will contest the Gujarat elections as its symbol.

Elections for the 182 assembly seats in Gujarat will be held in two phases on December 09 and 14. Counting of votes will be done on December 18, 2017.
