New Delhi: In a move likely to stir a debate, the management of the Dyal Singh (Evening) College has decided to rename it as "Vande Mataram Mahavidyalaya".
The decision was taken after the college Governing Body met on Friday to decide a new name for the college which is due to be converted to a morning college.
"Since Dyal Singh (Morning) College already exists, Dyal Singh (Evening) College — set up in 1958 and the first evening college in Delhi University — will have to be renamed", Chairman of the Governing Body, Amitabh Sinha, a BJP leader and a lawyer, said.
"The name was picked “to pay obeisance to the mother”, he added.
"Notification was issued that Executive Council approved Dyal Singh evening college becoming a full-fledged day college. Then we had to give it a new and inspiring name, we decided it should be 'Vande Mataram Mahavidyalaya'", he said adding the new name will be inspiring for the students.
Sinha said the resolution, finalising the college name, has been sent to the Delhi Uuniversity Vice-Chancellor, who will take “necessary action” and give formal approval.
A section of teachers and students however are unhappy with the decision.
“The only agenda that was discussed was the name proposed for the new college, which was Vande Mataram. I opposed this, as we first needed to decide where the college would function, before we start naming it,” said Viraj Kafle, one of the teacher representatives in the general body of the two colleges.
Dismissing the opposition, Sinha said only a handful of people were opposed to the move.
"The decision was taken unanimously. But some started protesting saying that it is not acceptable? Why so? Everybody in this universe is because of his/her mother; if anyone thinks that paying obeisance to mother is not good then that person is a beast, not a human being", he said.
