Violent protest in Chennai varsity after girl student 'caught cheating' hangs self

Protesting students of Sathyabama University Wednesday torched hostel furniture and set mattresses on fire after a girl student, who was caught allegedly cheating in the exam, committed suicide.

Protesting students alleged that Ragamonika, a first year Computer Science student hailing from Andhra Pradesh, was humiliated by a professor and sent out of the examination hall for copying in her exam. The girl, then, allegedly committed suicide by hanging self in the hostel, according to local media reports.

Sources said, the student had managed to sneak in a paper into the exam hall and was copying from it when the invigilator caught her red-handed. Depressed over the chiding, the girl went to her hostel room and committed suicide.

Police said that the girl had sent a text message to her brother, Rakesh who is also a student of the same university.

The victim’s parents have been informed. and her body has been sent for post-mortem.

Videos shared on social media by students show mattresses being set on fire in a hall. Another video shows a large gathering of students, police patrol vehicles are waiting nearby.

Fire fighters said the blaze in the hostel has been extinguished, although the students did not allow fire tenders inside the campus.

The police was stationed in the campus later to prevent further violence.
