Hyderabad: Hyderabad MP Asaduddin Owaisi on Friday lashed out at RSS Chief Mohan Bhagwat on his assertion that the proposed Ram Temple will be built on the site of Babri Masjid which was demolished by Hindutva extremists.
Addressing at the VHP’s ‘Dharma Sansad’ in Karnataka’s Udupi town on Friday, Bhagwat said, “We must build a temple with the same stones there. The day is not far when a saffron flag will fly atop the mandir."
"We will construct it. It is not a populist declaration but a matter of our faith. It will not change," he said.
However, terming Bhagwat’s statement ‘obnoxious’, AIMIM Chief Owaisi said, "The RSS is assuming itself to be the ‘Supreme Court’."
"It is nothing but the old polarization tactic to help BJP win in the upcoming Gujarat election", he said.
“This is a delicate matter and RSS is playing with fire on this issue. I hope the Supreme Court takes note of this devious design, being laid out by Sangh Parivar,” Owaisi added.
Reacting to Owaisi's statement, senior BJP leader Subramanian Swamy said that attacking Bhagwat "is a favourite sport with some Muslim leaders" and added that the AIMIM leader has no locus standi in the case.
"I am sure there is no locus standi for Mr Owaisi in this case. Masjid can be built anywhere but temple for Ram Lalla cannot be built anywhere except for the place where he is assumed to be born by faith," he said.
Babri Masjid, the 17th century historic mosque, was demolished on December 06, 1992 by Hindu extremists who were reportedly led by Sangh Parivar.
A case pertaining to the ownership rights of the Babri Masjid land is pending in the Supreme Court. All efforts for an out of court solution have been proved unsuccessful. The apex court of India is expected to resume hearing in the case from December 05.
