
New Delhi: Months of protest by the students of Film and Television Institute of India (FTII) in Pune finally yielded result on Wednesday when the government replaced Gajendra Chauhan with actor Anupam Kher, Interestingly, like Chuhan, Kher is also a BJP leader and his wife is a party MP.
The FTII students were protesting ever since Chauhan, whose only caliber was working in a TV serial, was appointed as the institute's chief. The two-year tenure of Chauhan, which ended in March 2017, was marked by a 139-day strike by students.
Anupam Khan, who has been a former chairman of the Central Board of Film Certification and the National School of Drama.
He has appeared in over 500 films and has been part of the theatre circles. He has also been part of acclaimed international films such as the 2002 Golden Globe nominated Bend It Like Beckham, Ang Lee's Lust, Caution, and the 2013 Oscar-winning Silver Linings Playbook.
He has previously held the post of chairman of the Central Board of Film Certification and the National School of Drama.
Kher is a recipient of the Padma Shri in 2004 and the Padma Bhushan in 2016.
Talking to the media after Anupam Kher's appointment to the post, Chauhan said he has not been sacked but the new appointment was made as his tenure ended in March.
