Patna: A portion of a dam in Kahalgaon of Bhagalpur district in Bihar collapsed hours before its inauguration by Chief Minister Nitish Kumar. The collapse caused flood in several low-lying areas as the water rushed into residential areas in Kahalgaon.
A part of the ambitious Gateshwar Panth Canal Project, the dam was built at an estimated cost of Rs 389.31 crore.
Former Deputy Chief Minister Tejaswi Yadav alleged corruption for the collapse.
"Rs 389.31 crore dam collapses ahead of inauguration. The CM was to inaugurate the dam with much fan fare. Yet another dam collapses due of corruption," Tejashwi said in a message posted on Twitter.
389.31 करोड़ का बांध उद्घाटन के 24 घंटे पहले टूटा। CM ताम-झाम के साथ कल काटने वाले थे फीता। भ्रष्टाचार की भेंट चढ़ा एक और बाँध..

Minister of Water Resources however blamed the nature for the fiasco and said, "The dam broke due to release of water in full capacity. The incident has not caused any damage to the newly constructed part of the project'".
Nitish Kumar who was scheduled to inaugurate the dam canceled his trip.
