BHU Protest

Varanasi:
Taking moral responsibility of the ongoing violence following alleged molestation of a student, Prof Onkar Nath Singh, the Chief Proctor of Banaras Hindu University (BHU) has resigned from his post.

According to the reports. the government was annoyed with the way protests were handled and officials in the HRD ministry had asked him to quit. The Chief Proctor is responsible for maintaining law and order on the university campus.

The Banaras Hindu University (BHU) erupted in violent protest after a 21-year-old girl student was allegedly molested and the university administration failed to take any action.

Tension in the university campus escalated further after videos showing police baton charging the girl students went viral in the media.

The state government later suspended few top officials and ordered a probe even as the Vice Chancellor announced holidays days ahead of the scheduled time.

Things also went out of control because of the attitude of the BJP leaders, and after senior party MP Subramanian Swamy equated the protest of the students with the Naxalite Movement.

Meanwhile, the Joint Action Committee (JAC) of BHU is demanding the suspension of Vice Chancellor G.C. Tripathi.

Earlier in the day, the Varanasi District Magistrate had written to the BHU Registrar asking him to take immediate steps to address the concerns of the female students.

Police too are investigating the alleged molestation of the girl student and the FIRs against students for allegedly indulging in arson and attack on police.

The commissioner and ADG submitted the 'fact-finding' report to the government on Tuesday.

The commissioner refused to share details, but sources said the report held some police and district administration officials guilty for the cane charge.

It, however, largely targeted the university administration for intensifying the situation, sources said.
