Leter to Modi

New Delhi: A day after two Bhartiya Janata Party (BJP) MPs voiced their concern over marginalization of Dalits in the country, another Dalit MP of the ruling party dashed a letter to the prime minister saying his government has done nothing for the lower castes in the last four years.

The letter written by Yashwant Singh, BJP MP and Dalit leader from Uttar Pradesh, is tagged by news agency ANI with this comment, ‘BJP MP from Uttar Pradesh's Nagina, Yashwant Singh, writes to PM Modi, says, 'Being a Dalit my capabilities have not been put to use, I only became an MP because of reservation,' adds that, 'In 4 years the govt has done nothing for the 30 crore Dalits of the country.'

The letter written in Hindi language on the letterhead of the angry MP is since been viral in the media. The letter comes a day after Prime Minister Modi claimed that no other government had honored Dr BR Ambedkar the way his government had done. In his letter, the MP also appealed to the Supreme Court to overturn the decision on the SC/ST Act.

Earlier, two BJP MPs one from UP’s Robertsganj and the other from Etawah had also written letters to PM Narendra Modi urging him "to protect the honour of Dalits" and seeking his intervention in cases of atrocities after the April 2 Dalit agitation.

Chote Lal Kharwar, tribal MP from Robertsganj, had also accused the Yogi Adityanath-led government of mistreatment. The BJP MP also said he was threatened with a pistol by an opponent who used abusive, casteist language against him, but the police did not register a case.

In the letter, Kharwar complained about a local party functionary helping the rival Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) in a block-level election and undermining his efforts. He said attempts were being made to induct the BSP rival into the BJP.

Seeking Modi’s intervention in cases of atrocities after the April 2 Dalit agitation, Etawah MP Ashok Kumar Dohre, in his letter said Dalits, especially in UP, were being targeted by police and cases were being lodged against them after April 2. He said Dalits were being pulled out of their homes and beaten up. “Casteist comments were being hurled at them,” Dohre said, demanding action against police.

Neither the prime minister nor the BJP has reacted to the letter of Singh which is now widely shared all across.

Recently, violence erupted during a nationwide bandh by Dalits to protest the softening of provisions of the SC/ST Act. At least 11 people died and several others were injured in the "Bharat bandh" called on Monday by Dalit outfits to protest the softening of certain provisions of the SC/ST (Prevention of Atrocities) Act.
