Madurai (Tamil Nadu): Tamil Nadu Megastar Kamal Haasan on Wednesday launched his political party ‘Makkal Needhi Maiam’, which translates 'People’s Justice Front', amid much fanfare in Tamil Nadu’s political capital Madurai.
Kamal Haasan also unfurled the party’s flag – six interlinked hands with a star at the centre – which he said denotes the unity of the six southern states. "My party's name is Makkal Needhi Maiam (People's Justice Front)", Kamal Haasan announced while formally launching his new political outfit at a mega ceremony in Madurai.
Accompanying the 63-year-old actor on the stage was Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal. The Aam Aadmi Party's Tamil Nadu incharge Somnath Bharti was also present.
"The newly founded MAKKAL NEEDHI MAIAM is your party. Its here to stay, and to make the change we all aspire for. Guide us to serve you," Haasan tweeted, along with an image of his new party's flag - six hands joined together - three in red, three in white - with a star in the middle.
"You must be an example to the present day political system and I will be seeking your suggestions rather than giving you speeches," Haasan said in his address before nearly a lakh supporters.
With this, Kamal Haasan becomes one more actor from the Tamil Nadu movie world to float a political party. Few months back, another Rajnikanth had also launched his political party in Tamil Nadu where filmstars have ruled the political arena for decades.
Earlier in the day, Kamal Haasan visited Former President APJ Abdul Kalam's residence in Rameshwaram and met the latter's family member as he prepared to launch his political party. Kamal Haasan also quoted APJ Kalam saying he intended to begin his political career with the former President's vision.
"Greatness can come from simple beginnings. Actually it will come only from simplicity. Glad to start my journey from a great man’s simple abode", Kamal Haasan posted on Twitter a little while ago.
While announcing his political tour last month, the actor had said he too shared the vision of Kalam who dreamt of a "good Tamil Nadu". Posters plastered across the streets of Madurai and Rameswaram show actor Kamal Haasan emulating iconic leaders including former president of India APJ Abdul Kalam, say reports.
Haasan is shown next to Dr APJ Abdul Kalam, and other iconic leaders including rationalist leader Periyar and BR Ambedkar. The report further said Haasan is shown as the second Kalam in some posters. Kamal Haasan arrived in Rameshwaram on Tuesday night and was given a rousing welcome by his supporters.
The 62-year-old’s supporters raised slogans "Hail Varungala Muthalvere (Hail future chief minister)", "Hail Kamal Haasan” as he arrived in his native Ramanathapuram district in southern Tamil Nadu.
In September last year, there were wild speculations that the Tamil Megastar might use the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) as the launching pad to start a new inning as politician. The specualtions gained momentum after he met Kejriwal in Chennai. Before that Kamal Haasan had also called on Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan.
Kamal had earlier ruled out any interest in the Bhartiya Janata Party (BJP) saying "his colour is not saffron". His remarks came amidst rumours that Rajnikanth, another superstar of Tamil industry, is planning to join the Bhartiya Janata Party (BJP). Later, Ranjnikanth floated his own party in the state and announced to field candidates in the upcoming Tamil Nadu elections.
Haasan had been vocal against the Tamil Nadu government on the issue of corruption, thus incurring the wrath of several state ministers, who have accused the actor of speaking in general terms and dared him to provide evidence of his charges. Haasan had also earlier urged his fans to continue questioning the government and calling his fans to be ready to march towards Fort St. George in Chennai, where the Tamil Nadu Assembly is located
