Malegaon: Officials from different government departments, teachers and NGOs along with a large number of people led by Maharashtra State Minister Dada Bhuse and Commissioner Malegaon Sangita Dhaygude participated in the cleanliness drive of Mousam River which began Wednesday morning.
Mousam River, popularly known as Mausam Nadi, is located in the center of Malegaon. On the riverfront are located the Malegaon Municipal Corporation (MMC) building and the historic Malegaon Fort. Mousam River meets Girna River near New Agra Road Bridge in the city outskirt. However the river, which once attracted migrants from different parts of the country to settle along its two sides, today is a deadly cocktail of groundwater, sewage discharge and spillage from different sources.
Efforts to clean the Mousam River were undertaken many times in the past. But, the river remained in bad shape because of the lackluster response from the civil society and also the lack of interest of the officer in-charge.
The situation today however was different as Minister Dada Bhuse and Municipal Commissioner Sangita Dhaygode not only led the campaign, but also cleaned part of the river with own hands. By the afternoon they were able to remove over 60-ton of wastes with the help of 15 JCB machines, 15 tractors and 02 dumpers.

“Mousam River today has become the main source of pollution in the city. This is why we have undertaken this massive cleanliness drive. We will repeat this drive every one and two months if needed so that the river is restored completely”, she said.
“The civic body has also passed a budget of 88 crore rupees to construct a Sewage Treatment Plant (STP) for which the tender has also been floated. The Sewage Treatment Plant (STP) should be ready by the time the river is completely cleaned”, she said.
Others who participated in the cleanliness drive included Mayor Shaikh Rasheed, Deputy Mayor Sakharam Ghodke, Tahslidar Jyoti Deore, Additional Superintendent of Police (ASP) Harsh Poddar, DYSP Gajanan Rajmane and heads of various departments of the Malegaon civic body.
