Makkah (Saudi Arabia): A pilgrim who was on a tour to the Holy land of Saudi Arabia ended his life by jumping from the roof of the Grand Mosque in Makkah to the ground floor of Tawwaf area - the circumambulation nave.
A media spokesman of Makkah police said the incident happened at 9.20 p.m. on Friday while the faithful were preparing for Trawwh prayers. Saudi police later confirmed his the death.
The motive of the individual – who took his life just feets away from the Holy Kaba – is still under the wraps, however an investigation is underway.
“The body was rushed to a hospital, pending the results of investigation into the incident, particularly his identity, and reasons behind his behavior despite the erection of a strong round fence to protect people from falling down", a Saudi Press Agency statement quoted the spokesman as saying.
There are conflicting reports about the identity of the man who committed suicide - possibly the only incident of its nature, by jumping off the Makkah Haram building. Local media in Pakistan identified the man as of being a Pakistani. However, a leading Saudi portal Ajel reports that the deceased was a 26-year-old French convert.
Incidentally the day coincided with the last Friday of the ongoing month Ramadan. Earlier in the afternoon, hundreds of thousands of worshipers gathered at the Makkah Grand Mosque to perform Friday prayer. Crowds made up of Saudis, residents as well as foreign visitors and Umrah pilgrims, filled all corners of the Grand Mosque, as captured by a Saudi Press Agency photographer.
Previously in Feb. 2017, a man tried to light himself on fire inside the complex but was prevented from doing so.
Meanwhile, an alleged video of the incident showing the man jumping off the roof of the Grand Mosque , falling and then landing on the ground with a loud thud, is viral online and is being widely shared on social media platforms.
