Ramgarh (Jharkhand): A fast track court in Ramgarh Wednesday sentenced 11 people, including a BJP leader, to life imprisonment for lynching a meat trader in June last year over the suspicion that he was carrying beef in his car.
The court also directed the district services legal authority (DLSA) to initiate proceedings for ensuring adequate compensation to the victim’s family.
Judge Om Prakash had found them guilty on March 16 under IPC sections 147 (rioting), 148 (rioting with deadly weapons), 149 (unlawful assembly), 435 (mischief by fire or explosive substance) and 302 (murder). The quantum of punishment was pronounced today.
The 11 convicted include a district media cell incharge of BJP, Nitayanand Mahto, besides at least three members of the local gau raksha samiti – Santosh Singh, Deepak Mishra and Chhotu Verma. The others are Sikander Ram, Vicky Saw, Raju Kumar, Vikram Prasad, Kapil Thakur and Uttam Kumar.
A group of people had lynched 40-year-old Alimuddin Ansari in Bazaar Tand locality of Ramgarh town on June 29, 2017, on the suspicion that he was carrying beef in his car. Forensic tests later confirmed that the meat he was carrying was beef, the sale of which is banned in the state.
According to the court, Alimuddin, also known as Asgar Ansari, Maruti car was stopped by a mob near Bazaar Tand area in Ramgarh district.
In a video that emerged later, Nityanand Mahto, the district BJP's media in-charge was seen dragging Asgar Ansari out of the car that a group of cow vigilantes had forced to stop near Ranchi, the police had told the court. The mob took over from there and mercilessly thrashed him. Asgar Ansari's car was also set on fire.
The police stepped in but by the time they were able to pull him away from mob, the meat trader had sustained serious injuries. He later died in the hospital.
