New Delhi: All public transport vehicles including buses and taxis will compulsorily have a vehicle location tracking device or GPS and one or more emergency buttons with effect from April 01, 2018, Ministry of Road Transport and Highways informed the Parliament on Thursday.
"The Ministry has issued notification G.S.R 1095 (E) dated 28.11.2016 mandating the provision of a vehicle location tracking device and one or more emergency buttons with effect from 1st April, 2018 in public service vehicles", Minister of State for Road Transport and Highways Mansukh Lal Mandavia said in a written reply to a question in Lok Sabha on Thursday.
"However, two-wheelers, E-rickshaw, three wheelers and any transport vehicles for which permit is not required under the Motor Vehicle Act, 1988 will be exempted", he said.
The panic buttons will be installed in front of the passenger’s seat for easy access. Once pressed, both the transport department and police control rooms will be alerted. “If a woman in distress presses it, a signal will be transmitted to a centralised control room. The GPS device in the vehicle will help authorities track the vehicle’s location. The movement of the buses can be tracked round the clock,” a Ministry of Road official had said.
Earlier, there was also a proposal to install CCTV cameras in in buses having more than 23 seats. The idea was however dropped due to privacy concerns.
The proposal to install GPS, panic button and CCTV cameras was moved after a young girl was raped and brutally murdered in a running bus in New Delhi.
