New Delhi: Union Minister Ramdas Athawale on August 09 launched an awareness program to encourage organ donation in people at grassroots-level. The program is aimed at reaching out to over a million people in two years.
Led by Nayati Healthcare, the initiative focused on encouraging people to pledge their organs. It aimed at educating and spreading awareness among people about how pledging organs can save lives.
As said by Nayati Healthcare in a statement, the initiative was taken in the presence of members of the Rotary Club and the Organ Donation India Foundation.
Besides providing quality services in the western Uttar Pradesh region, the hospital has been a center of excellence for North India.
"I am happy to be a part of the Nayati Organ Donation (NOD) programme. I am sure through the initiative, they will reach out to people across different sections of the society, educate and empower them to participate in the noble cause and thus strengthen the nation", Ramdas Athawale said.
Niira Radia, the Chairperson of Nayati Healthcare, said that every day we see precious lives being lost because of the increasing need for organs and their unavailability.
She stated that the situation is “more acute” in this region as people suffer from chronic organ diseases and in most situations, they aren’t even aware of the magnitude of their condition.
Niira Radia also announced that a heart and lung transplant programme will be launched by the facility soon.
She believes that, “India is witness to huge disparity between the number of transplants awaited, and the organs available.”
"The main motive behind this initiative is to bring about a change in the perceptions and foster a culture of organ donation", Niira Radia added.
