According to a report by National Center for Biotechnology Information (NCBI), more than 600 million adults across the globe are obese, and almost 1 million people die every year due to this condition. In India, nearly 135 million people suffer from obesity.
Although, the condition can be attributed to unhealthy food habits and inactive lifestyle, obesity poses a serious threat to an individual’s life span as it leads to conditions such as high blood pressure, thyroid, diabetes and orthopedic problems. Yet, the condition is often brushed off as ‘a lifestyle issue’ and consequently, there is almost negligible medical awareness about its surgical cure in many parts of the country.
Known as one of the most successful weight-loss methods, Bariatric surgery is a combination of different procedures such as gastric bypass, sleeve gastrectomy, etc. In layman terms, the surgeons make certain changes in the patient’s stomach, which restricts the amount of food one can eat, decreases the capacity of nutrient absorption, or both.
Dr Yogesh Agarwala, Chairman, Center of MAS, Bariatric & GI surgery at Nayati Healthcare, says, “An individual who decides to go for a bariatric surgery doesn’t lose even a single gram on immediate basis. However, over the span of the initial two to three months, the person loses 35 to 40 kg weight followed by a consistent loss of four to five Kg’s every month. In about eight to nine months, the individual attains his/her normal weight.”
With the advancement in technology, researchers and doctors have developed minimally invasive techniques to perform the procedure. This serves the dual purpose of small incision scars and increased efficiency. However, inspite of the advancement in medical treatments, lack of awareness and resource accessibility in rural areas of the country has led to life-threatening diseases in obese people.
While metropolitans have different hospital chains that offer bariatric surgery, tier-2, tier-3 cities have very few hospitals that provide high quality surgery at economical prices. For instance, Nayati Healthcare’s units in Mathura (Nayati Medicity) and Agra (Nayati Hospital) can be the primary choice for bariatric surgery as both the units are renowned for their experienced doctors, state-of-the-art technology, minimal side-effects, and economical prices.
That said, the awareness quotient of obese people between the age group of 18 to 60 years must be increased so as to help them understand that they have a medical condition and it is curable.
Commenting on this, Dr Agarwala from Nayati Healthcare said, “Obesity is an underrated, yet deadly condition as it makes the patient vulnerable to other diseases such as hypertension, thyroid, blood pressure, diabetes, etc. Bariatric surgery is nothing short of a miracle for obese people as it frees them from the grip of these diseases and helps them lead a happy life.”
