Mumba: Bajaj Group Chairman Rahul Bajaj Saturday expressed concern the absence of effective action against lynchings, the remark of Bhopal MP and Malegaon blast accused Pragya Singh Thakur praising Nathuram Godse, and also the lack of confidence among corporates to criticise the central government.
The unstopable Rahul Bajaj during a panel discussion laid bare his soul on the prevaling situation in India in front of Union Home Minister Amit Shah, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman and Railways Minister Piyush Goyal amidst frequent appluase.
"They call him a partriot despite knowing that he was the killer of Mahatma Gandhi. You gave Pragya Singh Thakur the party ticket. Then made her a member of a Parliamentary Committee even after the Prime Minister had said it would be difficult for him to forgive her (after she had said something similar earlier)", Rahul Bajaj said at an awards event organised by The Economic Times in Mumbai.
On Lynchings, Bajaj said, "It creates an environment of intolerance and we are scared. We don’t want to say certain things but we see that until now no one has been convicted”.
Bajaj also said that during the UPA era people had liberty to criticise the wrong policies of the govenrment. "But now people are afraid to utter a word against the government. They don't knwo if you will appriciate the criticism", he is heard saying in the vido widely being shared on the social media.
Responding to Bajaj Amit Shah said that he and senior BJP leaders had immediately condemned whatever Thakur had said. “Neither the BJP nor the government supports any such statement. We strongly condemn it,” Shah said.
"I would like to say that there is no need for anybody to fear… No one wants to scare… and we have done nothing to be concerned about any criticism… The government has run in the most transparent way, and we have no fear of any kind of opposition, and if anyone does criticise, we will look at the merit of the same and make efforts to improve ourselves),” Shah said.
Rahul Bajaj's comments came a day after former Prime Minister and ace economist Dr Manmohan Singh said that there was a climate of fear which is adding to the slowing down of GDP growth and economy in the country.
