New Delhi: Kanhaiya Kumar, former JNU Students' Union President who came to fame after he was arrested in a sedition case, will be CPI (M) candidate from Begusarai in the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, media reports said.
Begusarai, a Left wing bastion in Bihar and dominated by Bhumihar community, is the home town of Kanhaiya Kumar.
Begusarai unit of the CPI has sent a recommendation for Kanhaiya Kumar’s candidature. The announcement will be made after approval from the party’s state executive in coming month, National Herald reported citing sources.
Begusarai parliamentary seat was won by Rajiv Ranjan Singh and Dr. Monazir Hassan of Janata Dal (U) in 2004 and 2009 Lok Sabha elections. CPI candidate Rajendra Prasad Singh was third in the 2014 Lok Sabha election when the seat was won by BJP's Dr Bhola Singh.
Kanhaiya Kumar was born into an upper caste Bhumihar community in January 1987 and brought up in the village of Bihat near Barauni in Begusarai district. He was elected to the 125-member party national council of the Communist Party of India (CPI) On 29 April 2018.
The Lok Sabha polls 2019 is likely to be held in the month of April and May.
