Ranchi Protest

Ranchi: Ranchi remained peaceful on Saturday following a protest which turned violent the previous day against the lynching of Tabrez Ansari, a Muslim youth, in Jharkhand's Seraikala district last month.

The protest erupted following a public meeting on Friday called by the Muttahida Muslim Mahaz at the Risaldar ground in Doranda.

Following the meeting, thousands of community members hit the Mahatma Gandhi Main Road shouting slogans, where a youth was also stabbed.

Local Muslims said their protest was peaceful. However, it turned violent after three Muslim youths were thrashed at the Airport ground.

Following the attacks on Muslim youths, community members gathered at Ekra mosque on Friday night and vandalised several vehicles, locals said.

The police however, intervened soon and brought the situation under control.

"The situation is under control. Suitable action will be taken against the people who were inviolved in any incident on Friday," Ranchi SSP Anish Gupta told reporters on Saturday.

According to the police, action will be taken based on the CCTV footage.

Peaceful protests against the brutal killing of Tabrez Ansari were also held in other parts of India including Malegaon in Maharashtra.

Incidentally, an auto-rickshaw driver was also attacked soon after the protest in Malegaon on July 01. The situation however could not worsen as Muslim leaders intervened and persuaded angry youths to maintain peace.
