New Delhi: Sadhvi Pragya Singh Thakur, one of the key accused in 2008 Malegaon blast case who won the 2019 Lok Sabha election from Bhopal, has been sacked from the Defence Ministry panel after she praised the assassin of Mahatama Gandhi in Lok Sabha.
Informing this, BJP working president JP Nadda also said the party has decided that Thakur will not attend meetings of BJP parliamentary party during the session.
Sadhvi Pragya was appointed in the parliamentary panel formed by the Defence Ministry on November 21. She was sacked from the committee after uproar over her remark made in the Lok Sabha on Wednesday praising Nathuram Godse as a patriot.
During a debate in the Lok Sabha on the Special Protection Group (Amendment) Bill, DMK leader A Raja cited a statement of Nathuram Godse on why he killed Mahatma Gandhi. Raja said Godse admitted he had nursed a grudge against Gandhi for 32 years, and killed him because he believed in a particular philosophy.
To this, Pragya Singh Thakur interrupted and told Raja not to give example of a 'deshbhakt'.
The Speaker expunged her remarks from the proceedings of the Lok Sabha after strong protest from the opposition leaders. But, demand for action against her grew the following day. A number of people also demanded from the BJP leadership to sack her from the party.
"The nation now wants to know from the BJP whether it is with Gandhiji or Godse? They should clarify this now. If the party is with Gandhiji, then it must take strict action against those who glorify Gandhi's killer", the Madhya Pradesh CM said urging PM Modi to take action againt the Sadhvi.
This is not the first time when SIngh praised Godse. She had referred to Godse as a patriot in May this year during campaigning for the Lok Sabha elections. Her statement had triggered a huge row with PM Modi saying he would never forgive her for insulting Mahatama Gandhi.
What action PM Modi took against his party MP is not known. But, the controversial MP, whose motorcycle was used in the 2008 Malegaon blast, was later appointed to the Parliamentary panel led by Union Defence minister Rajnath Singh.
"Is she deliberately making such remarks to embarrass the BJP or she has some kind of tacit understanding within the party", a panelist said during a TV debate. The TV achor said her remarks hailing Godse was supported by two BJP MPs.
"This raises questions and the BJP must explain what actually is its stand on Mahatama Gandhi", the panelist said.
