NEET Twice A Year

NEET Twice A Year: The National Testing Agency (NTA) is considering to hold medical entrance exam, popularly knwon as National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET), twice in a year as there is a huge demand from the students in this regard.

"We are receiving frequent requests from the students and parents to conduct NEET two times in a year - like JEE Main", NTA Chief Vineet Joshi said while talking to Indian Express.

He said a final call in this regard will be taken by HRD Ministry.

He also said that preparations by NTA to conduct NEET twice in a year is underway in a big way."If the HRD Ministry approves the proposal, NTA can conduct NEET twice from 2021 academic year", Joshi said.

Talks of holding NEET twice in a year are in the media ever since NTA decided to conduct engineering entrance, JEE Main, twice in a year in 2018.

In fact in July 2018, then Union Human Resource Development Minister (HRD) Prakash Javadekar, had said that along with JEE Main, NEET will also be held two times in an academic year.

"The JEE and NEET examinations will now take place twice a year", Javadekar said in a press conference on July 07, 2018.

“The National Testing Agency (NTA) will conduct them this year. The same student can take the exam both times a year and the best score will be counted,” he added.

“Students have been demanding this. As the exams happen once in a year and if some mishap happens during that day than the entire year gets wasted due to which this decision has been taken”, Javadekar had said.

The idea of holding NEET twice a year was however dropped following opposition by some states.

"The state's stand was the National Eligibility-cum-Entrance Test (NEET) should be conducted only once a year", Tamil Nadu School Education Minister K A Sengottaiyan said on July 08, 2018.

"Students cannot appear for NEET twice in the same year as a "six-month period will be short", he said.

Meanwhile, NTA Chief Vineet Joshi ruled out any change in the schedule or pattern of NEET 2020. As per the NEET 2020 Schedule released earlier, the medical entrance exam will be held on Sunday May 03, 2020.
