New Delhi: The Washington Post has hired Indian journalist Rana Ayyub as its latest contributing writer to the Global Opinions section, the Jeff Bezos-owned company announced on Thursday.

Mumbai-based Rana Ayyub will write regularly about political affairs in India.

Rana Ayyub, a known critic of Modi government's policies, joins Global Opinions writers covering India, including Barkha Dutt.

Rana Ayyub was previously an editor with the investigative magazine Tehelka. But, she came to fame after the publication of "Gujarat Files: Anatomy of a Cover-Up" - a book based on 2002 anti-Muslim riots in Gujarat.

Rana worked on Gujarat Files for more than eight month as an undercover reporter for Tehelka. After the completion of the project, Tehelka however refused to publish the book.

Consequently, Rana published the book on her own. The book has so far been translated in 12 International languages.

Rana Ayyub was recently in news when she visited Kashmir after abrogation of Article 370 on August 05, 2019. After the publication of her story based on her meetings with Kashmiris, a government official called a press meet to refute Rana Ayyub's report highlighting atrocities in Kashmir.

Rana Ayyub's father Mohammed Ayyub Waqif is a renowned Urdu Scholar. He was born and grown up in Azamgarh, Uttar Pradesh. He migrated to Mumbai sometimes in 1965.
