Mumbai: Hundreds of thousands of women of all faiths, colors, castes and communities across the world Saturday donned Hijab to celebrate the 8th edition of #WorldHijabDay and show solidarity with Muslim women.
Universities, campuses, offices and streets looked decorated as women donning colourful Hijab and scarf showed up in a a large number to mark the event.
The World Hijab Day, founded in 2013 by New Yorker Nazma Khan, started in response to Muslim women being harassed for wearing the head covering used by some women who practice Islam. Organizers had asked non-Muslim women to wear hijabs for a day in solidarity with Muslim women worldwide.
"Inviting sisters in humanity of ALL faiths & backgrounds to wear the #hijab for a day on February 1st, 2020 in solidarity with Muslim women around the world. Every day, women in hijab get discriminated globally simply for following their faith", the message posted by @WorldHijabDay said.
Accepting to the call thousands of women posted their photographs on Twitter with thougtful and inspiring messages. #WorldHijabDay trended all through the day Saturday on the social media sites, and also amon the top trends Sunday.
"The hijab is the most beautiful concept once actually understood. Best years of my life ..You don’t need validation to feel beautiful; focus on your heart .. it’s the only thing that can make you beautiful", FarahAkil @FarahAkilf wrote on Twitter.
“It’s my first #WorldHijabDay and it was fun. I like the feeling of the hijab and may start wearing it more often", Rebekah Burton, Atheist, USA said.
"Another #WorldHijabDay another great feeling! So happy to support the Muslim women of the world and let them know they're loved by me!” Kayla, Mormon, USA, wrote.
"I've been wearing hijab for 6 months, and today I took my shahada. I didn't plan for it to coincide with #WorldHijabDay, but that's how things worked out. However, now I think it'll be easy to remember when it happened! :) #WorldHijabDay2020", Sapphire, an anthropology student and a revert Muslim wrote.
The Shahada, also spelled Shahadah, is an Islamic creed, one of the Five Pillars of Islam and part of the Adhan, declaring belief in the oneness of God and the acceptance of Muhammad as God's messenger, as well as the wilayat of Ali according to Shia Islam.
Posting a beautiful photo of her's in Hijab, Noha F. Beydoun, described her feelings in these words. "Every day, I join millions of women across the globe that dawn hijab. They are brilliant and resilient. For each, it’s meaning is personal and unique. Hijab embodies the greatest attributes in human character. Hijab is honor, respect, dignity, and beauty. #WorldHijabDay", she wrote.
While expressing solidarity with Muslim women Marvin, a non-Muslim from Mexico, wrote, "I wanted to show support to women who wear the #hijab and recognize them as kind and amazing people; all my respect for you.”
