Malegaon Power Off Protest

Malegaon: People in almost entire Malegaon City Tuesday night turned the lights off to register their protest against Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA), National Register of Citizens (NRC) and National Population Register (NPR).

Almost whole of Malegaon was blacked out from 07:00 pm to 07:45 pm Tuesday as part of the ongoing protests across India against CAA-NRC-NPR.

More than 02 lakh powerlooms of the city became silent as soon as the clock struck 07. While majority of the people rushed to the mosques and offered prayers, women confined themseves inside their homes and prayed for the entire 45 minutes.

The City's main roads, chowks and landmarks including Old Agra Road, Qedwai Road, Shahidon Ki Yadgaar, Mushawerat Chowk, Mirza Ghalib Road, Aman Chowk, Khyaban-e-Nishat Chowk, Fateh Maidan, 60 ft Road, Mohd Ali Road, Salam Chacha Road, Kusumba Road, Maulana Azad Road were all engulfed in darkness.

Besides Muslim dominated areas, households and shops in parts of the City having sizeable Hindu population including Mamledar Galli and Panch Qandeel also switched the lights off in solidarity.

This is the third time in the past two months when whole of Malegaon protested against the CAA-NRC-NPR. Earlier, two massive rallies were taken out in December 2019 and January 2020 to express their anger against the newly enacted law and proposed citizen registers.

Today's lights off protest was held even as Minister of Home Affairs in a written reply in the Lok Sabha said the Modi government has not yet taken any decision regarding nationwide NRC.

Earlier, PM Modi too had said there "had never been any discussion on NRC". His claim was however refuted because of the presence of videos in which President Kovind, Union Minister Amit Shah and others can be seen talking about CAA, NRC and NPR.
