Guwahati: The Assam governmeny Wednesday announced to convert all Madrasas and Sanskrit Tols under it into normal schools and higher secondary schools.
Sharing the details of the decision, Assam Education Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said the conversion of all government run Madrasas and Sanskrit Tols to schools and higher secondary schools will be completed within the next few months.
"The govt run Madrassas, High Madrassas and Sanskrit Tols (schools) operating in Assam will be converted to regular schools,” Sarma told reporters in Guwahati.
“The Assam government has decided to close down the Madrasas and Sanskrit Tols because we don’t want the government institutions to provide religious education,” he added.
"There is no problem if someone is provide religious education. But if state funding is used to teach Quran, then we have to teach Gita, Bible as well", he said.
The BJP ruled Assam has about 1,200 Madrasas and 200 Sanskrit Tols where students from Hindu, Muslim and other communities acquire education.
Assam also has a Board which conducts annual examination along with state board exams. The certificates issued by these Madrasas are equivalent to Metriculation Class 10 and Higher Secondary Class 12.
